6/10: Arts + Activism Workshop
TUES, JUNE 10 at 5pm. Come for Arts + Activism Workshop, Stay for Open Mic! The workshop is free to attend, donations appreciated.
The Arts and Activism workshop will be geared for songwriters and musicians who are looking for ways to connect their musical and artistic practice to action. This can mean a lot of different things, which is why we’re thrilled to have both Nicole and Ali joining us (in person and on zoom, respectively), as they both have such a wide breadth of experience as multidisciplinary artists, musicians, and activists.
Ali Deneen is a songwriter and composer from Queens, NY. Ali's work challenges systems of power and the divisive narratives that separate us from one another and from our own truths. Ali worked as Musician in Residence for Reverend Billy and the Stop Shopping Choir from 2022-2024, including on their recent stint opening for Neil Young on his Love Earth Tour. Ali is a 2025 NYSCA Support for Artists Grant Recipient, and was awarded the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation Residency in 2020. They are also the Music Director for local puppet troupe extraordinaire The Boxcutter Collective, and are currently working on an opera about Joan of Arc.
Nicole Garneau is an interdisciplinary performing artist. Her book Performing Revolutionary: Art, Action, Activism was published in print in 2018 and audio in 2022. Originally from Chicago, she now lives in Rockcastle County, Kentucky where her cultural work is a mix of theater, education, and facilitation. She is a member of Alternate ROOTS and the producer of the Rebellious Performance Retreat in Kentucky.
*This workshop is part of our Emerging Musician's Incubator Performance is supported by a Music in Action grant from Live Music Society and presented in partnership with First Friday Berea.
